Between God and man: can we take it?

. . . the business of standing between God and humanity and mediating between the two is a dirty job. For essentially it means becoming the enemy of both sides. God will never give up His holiness, and man will not and cannot give up his sin. So there is an impasse. And whoever dares to step into this impasse and negotiate a peace must inevitably become the target of both man and of God, the whipping boy for both sides. This is how it was for Moses and all the prophets, this is how it was for Job, and this is how it would be for Christ Himself and for His followers. The fact is that God is looking for people just like this, people who by faith are so radically convinced of their own ultimate vindication by the Lord that they become willing to suffer any amount of divine wrath in this world, and along with it the wrath of their fellowmen, for the sake of making peace. God is looking for people who are ready to stand in the gap between sin and holiness, people who, by abandoning themselves to the bearing of the unbearable tension between flesh and spirit, between time and eternity, between necessity and possibility, become living signs of the reconciling of earth and Heaven.

Then finally when you speak of the vision of the Union Life Magazine going to “millions of copies” and the day when we fill “football stadiums”, once again, it is obvious that you don’t recognise the cutting edge of our message which will always produce the offence of the cross as with Jesus and Paul, and the evangelical world will not receive it, except in some watered-down version; and the danger of this new objective in Union Life to get the message more widely accepted only means that will be a watered down element. It’s the lack of anything less than total which has created waves.
So you see we really have two different objectives – one to be occupied solely in presenting out Total Truth, with no concern as to how it is received, which has been our glorious main thrust these years and grabbed some while alienating others; but now with another objective, not just of putting out THE TRUTH at all costs, let the chips fall where they may, but rather of making it somewhat even gradually palatable to readers. I think you will find by this latter means folks will gradually come to regard it as “just another deeper life Mag”, and largely bypass it as such: and it is only those who are totally “grabbed’ who will totally involve themselves with us.

I don’t like your “spiritual slump”, though I am glad of the word of testimony of how the Lord has used it. Of course if we could talk, you might be able to open your heart and explain more deeply what you went through. It is good to share these things. But at the same time, there is a place in Christ, where He is the fixed center of our lives, the other Self, the other I in us, and we don’t slump, because it is not really we living our lives and handling our problems; that is an illusion; the real I is Christ in me, and we walk the waters with Him.

You can't tell what God has for you, or what future purposes He might have in the experiences you are going through right now, so don't try to find out. Just keep doing what you feel at present He is giving you to do. He has a perfect purpose for all that is happening to you, even if at present it is not clear. So keep centered on this glorious freeing truth.
The single eye of faith of which Jesus spoke enables us to remain free within, regardless of outside circumstances and appearances. We are not to be double minded, frustrated by the circumstances. We are to accept fully the situation of the moment--the external situation He has us in, and the way we feel toward it--knowing that it is for the purpose of manifesting His life in us. Our sole job is to keep inwardly at rest in the midst of suffering and temptation--and in the midst of failure and seeming defeat--knowing that we walk with Him alone and that He walks in us and will cause us to walk in His ways.
Because He has determined to take us this way, He does not see the confusion, heaviness or perplexity, but only His next step in His perfect plan for us. And He in us is the one who will bring it to pass as we accept the present fully and rejoice in it, trusting that all things truly do work for good despite the appearance of the moment.

As I said in my previous note, I think I detect some strain coming in. Perhaps that is inevitable after a big blessing and with the temptation to try and keep the fires well stoked. But there is no fire except Jesus, and the only way we walk with Him is by the simplest of faith, whether we feel Him or no. Well, perhaps it is not right to say “whether we feel Him or no”, because when we abide in Him our cups do run over and that is the proof of His presence in our hearts. If that joy and peace and faith are missing, then it is sin, and the most continual form of sin is striving. That is to say trying to do things, or work things up, or maintain things, by self effort.

Concerning The Faith of Christ In Us: by Nancy Fitzpatrick Gilmore
When the faith of Christ in us is not yet established in its full measure. . . in its maturity of 'our walk of faith'. . . or of our learning the 'faith of Christ' in a certain thing, we usually know the agony of that faith until that faith is established in us by the Spirit Himself. . . (in us, as us).
When it comes to the 'faith of Christ in us' the faith IS the thing itself . . . the very substance. . . the EVIDENCE OF THE THING. Thus when we have "the faith" it IS the evidence of the thing, and it IS a done deal for us.
Others may not see "the substance" as we do, or "know the evidence" because it remains invisible to them. The manifestation in the physical is still to take place for all to see. Nevertheless we KNOW we have The Thing Spoken of for the Spirit himself IS our witness.

His ways are not our ways. My life seems so much easier than yours, with time to spend in the things of God, and even one’s work centering around Him. But all are God’s ways. When once we have seen that it is nothing less than Christ Himself living His life in us, then that makes Him a very ordinary person, marking papers and preparing lessons, as you say. It is He Himself doing this; and as you recognize it in this fact, then you relax in Him, even though your mind has to be centered on these mundane things. Don’t let resentment or rebellion against the way He has chosen to live His life in you mar the central rest which proceeds from the not I, but Christ relationship. That is living; and to “live in the truest sense” is only Christ living in His most mundane way through us, as He pleases. Christ is really seen in deeds of faithfulness, such as your teaching life, not in the many words and nice thoughts which make up so much of ours! So let Him live on in you!

Great is the mystery of suffering; yet this much we know: suffering is in the very warp and woof of the slow progress of mankind from ''the vanity of time to the riches of eternity,'' so deeply interwoven into the stuff of things that the very Captain of our salvation, in order to be ''made like unto His brethren'' had to be ''made perfect through suffering.'' Borne rebelliously it ''works death''; borne courageously it purifies; borne vicariously it helps to redeem.
All men taste of it, the innocent with the guilty; but not till the Creator was crucified was there placed within reach of a groaning and groping humanity, not indeed the full explanation of suffering, but at least the key to its transmutation: we have to learn that faith transforms the messenger of Satan into the means of grace: that believers are to glory in tribulations, count trials all joy, because all things work together for good to them that love God: and that God's soldiers are to see in their crosses the mystery of the birth-process, whereby death works in us, but life in others, for only the corn of wheat which falls into the ground and dies bears ''much fruit.''

When God called Paul, the apostle checked with no one. He "did not immediately consult with flesh and blood." He felt no need to be under submission or have a "covering." Apparently he did consult with those in Jerusalem at a later date, but not initially. He was
free to consult, or not to consult. At the time of the calling he inwardly knew what he was to do, and this allowed no alternative but to go directly to Arabia. We too can have total confidence in our decisions, knowing that we are the will of God, because he is our very life.

Rejoice and be glad, you empty vessel. Be glad that God refuses to honor your self-effort. Be glad of this time of affliction, this time of frustration, this time of fruitlessness - this time of hunger and thirst of your soul. For when you accept yourself as you are -- as the "nothing" of an empty vessel - without condemning yourself any longer, the promise is that you "shall be filled!" Indeed, you already are -- and in His time the manifestation will come forth.

The Ground of Our Praying

Prayer is the deliberate and persevering action of the soul. It is true and enduring, and full of grace. Prayer fastens the soul to God and makes it one with his will, through the deep inward working of the Holy Spirit.
I am the ground of your praying. First, it is my will that you should have this; then I make it your will, too: then I make you ask for it, and you do so. How then should you not have what you pray for?
Everything our good Lord makes us to pray for he has ordained that we should have since before time began.
When we come to heaven, our prayers shall be waiting for us as part of our delight with endless joyful thanks from God.

Now I see what it means to be a father.
No longer looking about, seeking acceptance.
Feigning righteousness, needing approval.
All I am is of God.
The spiritual is reality.
Mystical supercedes logic.
God is tangible.
Only when I forget does the world blind me.
But fatherhood is more.
It is seeing the futile struggles of the children,
Struggling against their nature,
Not trusting because they cannot see or hear.
It is loving them through their trials.
And sharing with them His burdens for others.
All is Good.
Each crisis potentially brings on understanding.
The children need a father, or they begin to make their own rules.
And to misunderstand the purpose behind their growing.
Without a father they think themselves mature.
And their growing stagnates.
A father sees the vast limitless power
And resources of God as accessible.
He sees with God's eyes into the needs of his children.
And as they know him, they grow.
God gave us church that His children might have fathers,
and that fathers might know the joy
of loving children to maturity.
