The Lord showed me back in the 60's how He wanted a "spirit attitude" in me, and I saw His way of having that happen. He gave me 1st. Thess. 5:18, which moved me in giving Him Praise in everything! Including the nasty! As this praising attitude toward Him (no matter what was happening) settled into me, this became my habitual attitude of spirit toward Him so I was always praising Him "in all things" no matter what.
During this time in my life I also asked the Lord to explain to me why He wanted me Praising Him in ALL things. The Spirit guided me to Romans 8:28 and 29; showing me that ALL THINGS were working TOGETHER for good where there is faith toward God as He had a defined plan in mind for me.
I began adding these words of "this truth revealed to me in Romans 8:28,29 to my word of praising Him in EVERYTHING". In other words, it went something like this through-out the day: "Thank You, Lord for (this thing which before usually upset me, and made me have a bad attitude), now I know You are "working this very thing for good where I am concerned".
It was in this learning that The Lord revealed to me through Philippians 2:13 that it was indeed God himself that was at work in me doing "the desiring" and "the willing of His own good pleasure. His life working in me, as me.
